How Social Media can Reduce Mental Health Stigma
This case study, created for a Campaigns for Social Change class, examines the significance of the #MyYoungerSelf campaign, where celebrities give advice to their younger selves about mental health struggles. Our study included tweets using the hash tag #MyYoungerSelf and celebrity videos for the campaign.
We concluded the use of narration and personal stories was significant in reducing social distance, and is the most effective ways to reduce stigma. Additionally, the most effective way to re-frame mental health was to create a community of empowerment: showing mental health is a strength not a weakness.
